José M. Aguilar-Hernández, Cal Poly Pomona

Associate Professor, Cal Poly Pomona, College of Education & Integrative Studies

José M. Aguilar-Hernández is an associate professor in the College of Education and Integrative Studies at Cal Poly Pomona. Aguilar-Hernández is a first-generation college student who transferred from Moorpark Community College to UCLA where he received his B.A. in History and Chicana/o Studies, M.A. in Latin American Studies, and Ph.D. in Education. As an interdisciplinary scholar, his research publications and teaching interests include social movements, higher education, pedagogy, critical race theory, and gender and sexuality.  Aguilar-Hernández has taught in ethnic studies and education departments at UCLA, California State University Northridge, and California State University Los Angeles.

Cindy Cruz, University of Arizona

Cindy Cruz is an associate professor in the Teaching, Learning and Sociocultural Studies Department at the University of Arizona. She received her BA in Literature from Scripps College and a Ph.D. in Urban Schooling from UCLA in 2006. Her research centers youth resistance and homeless queer and trans*youth praxis in Los Angeles, California. Her theoretical foundations center the work of decolonial and U.S. feminists of color theory. In a previous life, she was a high school English teacher and HIV counselor and this experience greatly influences her research and pedagogy. Dr. Cruz has been honored with several academic prizes, including the Antonia I. Castañeda Prize, the Golden Apple for Teaching Excellence, and AERA’s Queer Studies SIG Article of the Year.
